Did you know?

IDC forecasts that the business mobile component in Australia's enterprise mobility market will be worth in excess of A$5.5 billion by 2011, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7% (6.9%) during the forecast period.

Enterprise mobility spending also includes other key technology solutions markets, such as hardware, software, and IT services.

Enterprise Mobility is commonly defined as the process of extending business processes / applications / solutions through the use of wireless technology, which can be Wireless LAN (WLAN), cellular / mobile, or other technologies, such as Wireless Broadband (WiMAX). Enterprise mobility allows employees to gain access to business communications and applications while on the go, including emails and databases, using a mobile device, such as a data-capable mobile phone, wireless PDA, or laptop computer.

- LIMITED SEATS

Companies choose mobile applications to improve productivity and to offer greater flexibility to their employees. Continued advancements in mobile and wireless technologies — from improved wireless networks and security, to an exploding range of mobile devices and mobility solutions — enable companies to extend traditionally, office-bound corporate resources to their mobile workforce.

"By understanding the unique needs and expectations of organisations, mobile services and IT solutions providers addressing a tangible return, improved cost efficiencies, and a high level of manageability will have universal appeal among organisations irrespective of their unique industries or size of operations," says Jerson Yau, Analyst for Wireless & Mobility Research, IDC Australia.

Convergence heralds the dawn of futuristic solutions today, and have progressed from the drawing board to the field with alarming alacrity. Some of the futuristic solutions that generate the most interest and questions are:

Unified Communications (UC) - the provisioning of a common infrastructure to deliver, manage, and support a range of communications applications which are accessible through a user's desktop or mobile environment.
Mobility management suites - IT-centric and carrier-centric solutions are increasingly converging, allowing either the business organisation or the telco to host, manage, and provision mobile applications solutions to the end user. These can include mobile email, intranet/extranet application access, security services, and over-the-air (OTA) device and user policy management.
Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC) - the integration of landline and mobile/wireless technologies and services to create a single telecommunications network that ultimately offers a consistent service regardless of a user's location, access technology, and terminal.
Dual-mode devices and GPS - the integration of multiple radio transceivers on a device to allow a user to connect to any public or private network, ultimately enabling FMC. In addition, GPS integration will increasingly become commonplace on mobile devices allowing real-time, two-way user manipulation of location-based digital content.
